The Mayor of Irun, José Antonio Santano, and IBERDROLA’s delegate in Gipuzkoa, Carmen Pagés, inaugurated the new architectural lighting of the main façade of Irún Town Hall, provided by the company through its Fundación. This project provides an energy efficiency of 83% compared to the previous lighting, which translates into a saving of CO2 emissions of more than 3 tons per year.

 

This selection of luminaires allows the combination of the general lighting of the façade with focussed lighting that puts special emphasis on the building’s unique element.

The power rating of the lighting is only 500 Watts, less than a domestic microwave. A total of 11 projectors, 12 arrays of 120 cm and 31 m of RGB LED strips, which will allow dynamic colour changes, have been installed. This selection of luminaires allows the combination of the general lighting of the façade with focussed lighting that puts special emphasis on the building’s unique element. This, in compliance with the design criteria, will illuminate the lower columns and arches, the panels on the balconies and the recessed upper body. The shield will be highlighted and contrast lighting will be created on the porch and the balustrade on the roof.

Finally, the upper cornice and the area below the balcony will be drenched by the lighting of the vertical panels in order to give volume and contrast to the façade. The design is completed with a control system using a DMX installation which allows the programming of scenes and combinations of colours from a tactile screen within the building, which will make the control system easy to operate.

The Mayor of Irun, José Antonio Santano, thanked the Fundación Iberdrola “this gift to the city of Irun, will allow our town hall to shine as never before. It will also make the council “come to life” and with the new lighting’s scenes and other features the town hall’s façade will be able to join in with different engagements, events and special days”. The lighting will be commissioned tomorrow Friday 16th, to coincide with the weekend before the official start of the town’s festival. But the real debut for the new lighting will be on the night of 23 June, the official start to Irun’s festival when it will show off one of the unique lighting displays made possible with this new system. Carmen Pagés, Iberdrola’s delegate in Gipuzkoa, pointed out that “the main objective of the Fundación is to carry out projects that contribute to the common good, especially in areas such as the promotion, diffusion and support of culture and art or sustainable energy, with the specific aim of being a benchmark institution in the promotion of initiatives that improve people’s quality of life and promote sustainable development.”

Project background

In May 2016 Fundación Iberdrola España signed a collaboration agreement to design and implement the ornamental lighting of the main façade of the Irun City Council. The town hall is a beautiful building built in the seventeenth century in Baroque style; His project was realized by Felipe Crame, engineer commander of the place of San Sebastián in times of Fernando VI. In this building have traditionally located the municipal offices and, even today, they are part of the public services, including the Mayor’s offices. The main façade is made of ashlar masonry with cushions on the ground floor and corners, topped with a stone cornice on which there is a balustrade broken by the enormous limestone shield. On the ground floor, an arcade with quintuple arcade access to the interior of the building; Over each of the arches crowned effigies appear. On the main floor, a large balcony, supported by corbels, which opens five doors topped with pediments. The design of this ornamental lighting is made with both aesthetic and efficiency criteria, with LED technology, and in this case, with RGB luminaires that will allow the dynamic change of color and the programming of different light scenes. In addition to the general illumination will seek to create contrast between areas such as the porch and the balustrade and enhance with accent lighting unique elements such as the shield that finishes the top floor.
