Iberdrola collaborates through its Foundation with the AMICOS Association, a non-profit organisation whose mission is to provide services and support to help people with intellectual disabilities, autism, paralysis, brain injury and their families to fulfil their life goals and achieve inclusion as citizens with full rights in a fair and supporting society.

 

The geographical area in which Amico provides its services is predominantly rural, with very limited employment opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities.

2018 will be the first year in which the Foundation has collaborated with this Association after having provided social assistance in previous years to other charities, from which about five hundred people have benefited during that time.

In a meeting held this morning in the offices of AMICOS in Boiro, the Social Action manager of Fundación Iberdrola España, Alberto García Casas; the manager of Iberdrola in Galicia, Francisco Silva, and the director of AMICOS in Galicia, Juan España, welcomed the collaboration and detailed the initiatives that the two organisations will carry out in 2018.

The geographical area in which Amico provides its services is predominantly rural, with very limited employment opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities. The proposals include the creation of workshops where work can be carried out and instilling in the participants the routines and discipline required by the working world. The workshops also play an important rehabilitation role, encouraging good communication practices and relationships between co-workers.

The goal is to help people with intellectual disabilities residing in the rural areas around Barbanza (A Coruña) to acquire, through pre-job training and adapted workshops, the skills required to carry out activities in daily life and improve their qualifications in order to promote their future social and employment inclusion.

A number of activities will be carried out to this end, including running customised workshops (costume jewellery, modelling clay, creativity, crafts, recycled paper, psychomotor skills, art, reading and writing); pre-job workshops (packaging, making jam, handling food, screen printing, Biocentre and Ecogardening), training adapted to work demands; and personal counselling/guidance.

In principle about 35 people with intellectual disabilities living in Boiro and the rural areas in the Barbanza area (A Coruña) will attend the workshops.

Through its foundation in Spain, Iberdrola has consolidated its Social Programme over the last 8 years, promoting over 300 projects with a mean annual impact of 12,000 direct beneficiaries and 32,000 indirect beneficiaries. In addition, these projects also encourage voluntary work and contribute to job creation.

Through this initiative Fundación Iberdrola helps to achieve the sustainable development goals (SDG) defined by the United Nations Agenda 2030, which it has integrated into its business strategy. This aid helps the company to focus its efforts on meeting goals 1 (no poverty), 3 (good health and well-being), 4 (quality education), 5 (gender equality) and 10 (reduced inequalities).
